News of the store’s opening came amid Shoprite’s exit from the Kenyan market barely two years after launching local operations.

Carrefour already has 11 outlets in the Kenyan capital, serving the residents of Westlands, Parklands and the larger Thigiri area. The new store is Carrefour’s 12th store in the country and the second on the bustling Nairobi-Thika highway and is expected to create dozens of jobs.

According to the supermarket chain owner, Carrefour is streamlining its approach to stocking, creating cost-saving efficiencies that are passed on to the customers with access to its WhatsApp ordering service, allowing them to shop online and have their products delivered directly to their door.

This is in addition to Carrefour’s Click and Collect service, which will also be made available, giving customers the flexibility and convenience of shopping online and deciding when to collect their order at a time that suits their schedule.

“We are constantly looking at ways to enhance the customer experience and bring Carrefour value to more in the community. We also know that with busy schedules, customers seek convenience now more than ever before.

“That’s precisely what we offer with the opening of our new Garden City Mall location — a community store at the heart of it all where customer can get all the essentials effortlessly,” Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya at Majid Al Futtaim Retail said.

Meanwhile, Nigerian property group, Persianas to buy Shoprite's Nigerian business as the retailer prepares to exit the market.

According to Reuters, there was a bidding process in which Persianas Properties emerged as the buyer, and the company is arranging debt for the buyout. Shoprite is also awaiting regulatory approval on the sale of its Nigerian supermarket operation, though no further details have been disclosed.
