Sam J. Ervin IV is one of the most popular and richest Lawyer who was born on November 18, 1955 in Morganton, North Carolina, United States. In 2008, during his campaign to run for North Carolina Court of Appeals, Ervin was endorsed by the North Carolina Police Benevolent Association as well as The Charlotte Observer before the primary. Ervin was first in the non-partisan primary, receiving 37 per cent of votes. Ervin and the runner-up Kristin Ruth made it to the general election of November. Ervin was endorsed again by the Charlotte Observer for the general election. Ervin was the winner of the November election with 53 percent of the votes.
Ervin ran for the Supreme Court again in 2014, this time for the seat being vacated by Justice Mark Martin. He was endorsed by the Charlotte Observer and the (Raleigh) News and Observer, as well as by former Chief Justices Burley Mitchell and Henry E. Frye and Court of Appeals Chief Judges Sidney S. Eagles, Jr. and Gerald Arnold. Ervin defeated Justice Robert N. Hunter, Jr. with approximately 52 percent of the vote, according to unofficial returns.
From 2004 to 2007 Ervin was chairman of the Committee on Electricity of the National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC). Ervin has testified in his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives in relation to concerns about the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.
Ervin was a lawyer in Morganton between 1981 and 1999. He was a lawyer in 1999 when Ervin was appointed as a member of the North Carolina Utilities Commission by Governor Jim Hunt. Ervin was appointed to the commission by Gov. Mike Easley in 2007. The Utilities Commission is a quasi-judicial agency that is responsible for the regulation of the investor-owned electric, natural gas and telecommunications and sewer companies that provide services within North Carolina.
In 2012, Ervin announced that he would run for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He lost this race, receiving 48.1% of the vote to the incumbent Justice Paul Newby’s 51.9%.
